Burglar sentenced in string of thefts

A 41-year-old Dolores man was sentenced to 20 days in jail Thursday after pleading guilty in April to second-degree burglary. He was credited with seven days of time served.

"I am truly sorry," the defendant, Mark Williams, told District Court Judge Walker. "I have learned a valuable lesson."

Williams initially faced four felony second-degree burglary charges, a felony count for criminal mischief and a related misdemeanor offense in connection a string of burglaries last year. He and two co-defendants allegedly stole more than $20,000 in computer equipment, firearms, Native American artifacts and hunting equipment.

He was also sentenced to two years probation, ordered to a mental-health evaluation and outpatient treatment, submit to random drug and alcohol testing and ordered to pay court costs and restitution. Williams was ordered to report to the Montezuma County jail to start his sentence on June 22. District Attorney Will Furse said Williams had agreed to cooperate with officials.

Drug suspect violates bond

A Dolores man facing drug distribution charges is back in custody after violating bond conditions.

Maynard Peltier was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia on March 12. In custody on a $50,000 bond, the defendant appeared in court on Thursday after a bench warrant was issued for his arrest on May 28.

A deputy prosecutor told District Court Judge Walker that additional charges would be filed against Peltier, after police found him in possession of 14 grams of meth when he was arrested on the warrant.

He was ordered to return to court for a motions hearing at 3 p.m. on July 10.

Court records show he allegedly possessed 8 grams of meth when arrested after a traffic stop on U.S. 160.

Bond increased after failed drug test

A Cortez man had his bond increased to $5,000 on Thursday after failing drug tests and failing to report for drug tests.

According to court records, William Linga, age unknown, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and bond violation in connection to a menacing charge March 25.

Prosecutors asked that Linga's bond amount be doubled. A bond hearing was set for June 19.
