On Thursday, Brett Aprahamian faces court hearings to revoke his probation and receive a sentence after being arrested in September for armed robbery in Cortez.
His probation hearing is Nov. 16 at 1:30 p.m., and his sentencinghearing on Dec. 21 at 9 a.m.
Aprahamian was arrested Sept. 26 and charged with more than a dozen charges, which include a felony charge of aggravated robbery, vehicular eluding, first-degree motor vehicle theft and DUI.
Police received a 911 call at about 1 a.m. from robbery victim Jacob Begley, who told police that he had been robbed at knife point outside the Aneth Lodge on Main Street.
According to Begley, he was walking from the Speedway gas station when a man approached him with a knife and demanded he hand over his wallet. Begley gave the man his wallet, phone and tobacco “to prevent harm.”
While Cortez Police officer Shane Fletcher spoke with Begley, officer Trevor Robertson and Sgt. Mike Moran attempted to stop a stolen vehicle that was fleeing from police. During the chase, Moran said he realized the man matched the description of the robbery suspect, who was identified by his hairstyle.
Before colliding with officer Jason Giacchino’s vehicle and stopping near East Empire Street, the suspect led police on a chase, spinning out of control and striking multiple vehicles.
The man, who was identified as Aprahamian, told police he had “dope on me,” and police found a small bag of meth on his person.
Aprahamian had evaded police three times in the past and at first denied the robbery before saying he “needed money.” He told police he stole the car after finding it unlocked with the spare key inside.
He was also found in possession of the knife he reportedly used to rob Begley, but he is not permitted to possess weapons because of an active restraining order.
At the jail, Aprahamian was charged with a felony for aggravated robbery, vehicular eluding, first-degree motor vehicle theft, reckless endangerment, DUI, aggravated HTO, protection order violation, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, obstruction, first-degree criminal trespass, failure to display lamps when required, operating a vehicle when the seat belt was not securely fastened and failing to drive in a designated lane.
He is scheduled to appear in Montezuma County District Court on Nov. 16 at 1:30 p.m. and Dec. 21 at 9 a.m.
