The Bureau of Land Management has released a draft environmental assessment for public review that evaluates a lease application submitted by GCC Energy’s King II Coal Mine, which is about 15 miles west of Durango.

The environmental assessment, “Dunn Ranch Area Lease-By-Application and Mine Plan Modification,” is being prepared jointly with the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.

The BLM will hold a public hearing to receive public comments about the lease application and the preliminary environmental assessment from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, at the BLM Tres Rios Field Office, 29211 Colorado Highway 184, in Dolores.

An informational session about the project and environmental assessment also will be held 5 to 6 p.m. July 24 at the Dolores office.

The draft environmental assessment, maps and information about how to comment electronically are available through the BLM ePlanning site at www.go.usa.gov/xEKTV. Comments may be submitted verbally at the hearing or electronically through the ePlanning site by Aug. 5.
