Bears volleyball team heads to regional tournament

Dolores faces matchups against Cedaredge and West Grand
Dolores freshman Aryelle Wright goes up for a spike in the Bears’ district tournament win last weekend against Ignacio.

After taking second place in the Class 2A San Juan Basin League District Tournament last weekend, the Dolores Bears advance to the Class 2A Region C tournament.

Dolores (11-10), joins Cedaredge (19-4) and West Grand (19-4) in the region, with round-robin play beginning on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Cedaredge High School.

Bears’ assistant coach Tiffany Hill said that she thinks Cedaredge and West Grand play in leagues that are comparable in strength to Dolores’ league, and that she expects them to run the same 5-1 offense that the Bears utilize.

The Bears will work on fine tuning their rotation after making a change prior to the district tournament.

“We changed Josie (Majors) from outside hitter to a middle position and swung Cameron (Elder) to the outside,” Hill said. “They ran it against Ignacio and it worked well, so we’re going to continue to work on that.”

The team will travel on Friday and stay overnight before beginning play against West Grand on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

They will take on Cedaredge immediately after, and the pressure is on the Bears in order to advance to the state tournament.

“We have to win both of our games on Saturday to move on,” said Hill.
