Bear spotted rooting through garbage cans

On Monday night, the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office sent out a Nixle alert warning about wildlife and police activity in the area of Park and Valley streets in Cortez. There was no action necessary at the time.

Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin told The Journal that there was a “cinnamon-colored” bear spotted in the area last night. He estimated the bear to be about 2 years old.

He said that there was “no danger to anybody” and that the Sheriff’s Office just wanted people to know.

“I just hope that they secure their trash down there,” Nowlin said.

On Tuesday afternoon, another sighting was called in to dispatch in the area of South Madison and Seventh streets. It is unclear if the animal was spotted by police or animal control, or if any action was taken at that time.

No other information was available.
