The Cortez Public Library celebrates Cinco de Mayo with the colorful and talented Ballet Folklorico de Durango.
Festivities begin May 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the library, 202 N. Park St.
Ballet Folklorico de Durango is a program of El Centro de Muchos Colores Hispano Resource Center. Based at Fort Lewis College, El Centro offers the dance space to promote pride in Hispanic culture and assist with recruitment and retention of multicultural students in the dance program.
The dance group welcomes students ages 5 and up to join in weekly dance practices and occasional performances. Ballet Folklorico provides opportunities for students to perform these traditional Mexican dances on and off-campus.
Mentorship and leadership opportunities exist for Fort Lewis College students to travel the United States for performances and for annual professional Folklorico dance conference where mentors learn regional styles of Mexican Folkloric dancing. Any student or community member can join.
