On May 22, members of the Montezuma-Cortez High School community gathered to present end of the year awards.
The following awards were presented to each of the below listed athletes who distinguished themselves.
Seager Oliver wins U.S. Marines Distinguished Athlete Award
Over the course of the 2013-14 prep athletic season, wrestler Seager Oliver was spectacular.
Winner of the Class 4A 170-pound state title, Oliver finished his junior season with a 40-2 record overall.
Known for possessing an impressive work ethic, Oliver received the U.S. Marines Distinguished Athlete Award due, in part, to his refusal to ever give up.
“(Oliver) displays that will to win and many other marine like attributes that we admire,” said a U.S. Marine representative, who presented Oliver with the award.
Sage Kramer receives Diane Fox Inspirational Award
A four-year varsity swimmer for M-CHS, senior Sage Kramer distinguished herself in the pool, in the classroom and in the community.
The winner of multiple college scholarships, Kramer demonstrated outstanding courage and strength of character during her four years at M-CHS.
“The Diane Fox Inspirational Award recognizes a graduation senior who has persevered through significant personal adversity to go on and achieve his or her dreams,” said M-CHS athletic director Stacey Hall.
Auston Hart takes home Byron Rowe Fighting Heart Award
A four-year soccer player at M-CHS, senior Auston Hart will always be remembered for his toughness and resolve.
After breaking his jaw and receiving a severe concussion while playing goalie during his junior season, M-CHS, Hart defied all odds and returned for his senior year.
In recognition of his impressive comeback, Hart received the Byron Rowe Fighting Heart Award, which is presented annually to an athlete who never lets go of the idea to fight and win.
“I love (soccer) and I just wanted to come back and play my senior year,” said Hart.
Mikkel Waltman wins Eulalia Skinner Pioneer Award
Of the many athletes who have suited up for M-CHS over the last four years, senior Mikkel Waltman was consistently a leader.
Known for her positive, team-first attitude, Waltman received the Eulalia Skinner Pioneer Award for her work on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
“This young lady’s enthusiasm and respect is shown at all times,” said Hall while presenting the award.
Marlana Lopez earns KVFC Outstanding Female Athlete Award
Over the course of her four years at M-CHS, senior Marlana Lopez participated in three sports while participating in several other extra curricular activities.
During her season, Lopez suited up for M-CHS’s varsity softball team, varsity soccer team and varsity track team.
“(Lopez) was actively involved in an activity in every season that was available to her,” said M-CHS Vice Principal Dave Robinson, who presented the award.
Briston Walker receives KVFC Outstanding Male Athlete Award
One of M-CHS’s most outstanding athletes, senior Briston Walker impressed on the field, court and track over the last four years.
An all-conference selection in soccer, Walker played an integral role for the M-CHS basketball team and performed well in multiple events for the track team.
Walker also maintained a solid grade point average while participating in choir and several other school activities.
“You learn so much through sports,” said Walker. “You learn about your friendships and you learn about the value of committing to a team.”
