‘Assessor over-valued our property by 62%’

I wanted to share the disaster that my wife and I had to endure, making sure our property tax assessment was correct. During the process, the Montezuma County tax assessor provided wrong and incomplete data, multiple mathematical mistakes and an unwillingness to correct the information.

All of which significantly changed the required tax amount to be paid.

The Board of Equalization completely ignored our pleas to fix the mistakes and allowed the misinformation to stay. We appealed to the Board of Assessment Appeals and were then only able to fix the mistakes. The BAA reduced the determination from the tax assessor and board by approximately $250,000.

The community should be aware of the incompetence of the tax assessor’s office. The assessor over-valued our property by 62% and they ignored applicable law. Luckily, the BAA enforced the correct law and recognized the mistakes by the county.

My wife and I retired here to enjoy the area. We are disgusted with county officials, and their unwillingness to do the right and legal thing.
