A fire in massive slash piles behind the Aspen Wall Wood sawmill in Dolores has been 100% contained, but county emergency officials estimated Sunday that it could burn for days – and up to a year if it engulfed a large sawdust pile.

A fire that erupted Friday in a slash pile behind Aspen Wall Wood in Dolores was still burning Sunday.
It’s uncertain how the fire started, but officials believe it began deep within the slash pile.
Aspen Wall Wood produces paneling for homes and businesses.
A Saturday snowstorm aided the fire’s containment, said Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin.
Firefighters kept the fire from spreading north into Lost Canyon, according to Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin.
Firefighters contained the fire Saturday morning, but it was estimated that it could burn longer.
