Those in the community who are at least 60 years old are eligible – and welcome – to get a $5 meal from Southwest Health System.
It’s part of something called the Senior Friends Lunches program.
That program runs three days a week – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. It’s set to start Feb. 17.
“Invaluable support” from the Yellow Jacket Charitable Fund, the Onward! General Endowment Fund and the PepsiCo Smiles in Action Grant made the program possible.
The three groups contributed a cumulative $5,000 in grant money to continue the program through 2025.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to these organizations,” the hospital said in a news release.
In 2024, the hospital served 2,463 meals to seniors as part of the program. In the news release, it highlighted how glad it is “to sustain its $5 lunch program for senior friends who have enjoyed meals at our café.”
There’s a limit of one meal per person, and there are no refills on salads or soft drinks. A large salad counts as a meal, whereas a small salad counts as a side.
The news release asked participants to let hospital employees order first, since they have a limited lunch window. Daily specials are subject to change and are considered a meal.
