Mancos Valley Chorus and M-CHS team up for a crowd-pleaser

The Mancos Valley Chorus and the Montezuma-Cortez concert and chamber choirs teamed up Wednesday, Dec. 9, for a standing room only concert at the M-CHS auditorium.

The Mancos Valley Chorus began the concert with its program “Snowflakes and Other Wintry Things.” “The Three-Minute Nutcracker” delighted the audience, said Joyce Stevenson, president of the SouthWest Colorado Concerts, which sponsored the concert.

“Younger members of the audience knew all the words to the finale ‘Let It Go’ from the movie ‘Frozen,’ said Stevenson.

After an intermission, the high school concert and chamber choirs performed Christmas songs and some numbers from their fall program, and applauded the clapping rhythms of “Cindy” and the a cappella “That’s Christmas to Me.” Soloists from the Mancos Valley Chorus and the M-CHS Choir also were warmly received.

The Mancos Valley Chorus joined the high school choirs on stage for the finales “Masters in this Hall,” which earned a standing ovation.

The performance was free, but donations were accepted. Both the Mancos Valley Chorus and sponsor SouthWest Colorado Concerts decided to donate all the money to the high school’s travel fund for a trip next May to Washington, D.C., to sing at the National Memorial Choral Festival at the Kennedy Center. The high school received almost $1,400 that night from donations at the door and from refreshments that the high school choir provided during intermission.
