5 things to know today about the Lightner Creek Fire

The Lightner Creek Fire continues to burn this morning. Here are five things to know today as agenies continue to fight it:

1. So far, no new evacuations have been ordered. Some residents are on pre-evacuation notice. Here are some tips from the State of Colorado Community Preparedness Program for preparing an emergency kit.

Must have supplies: First aid kit, phone and charger, weather radio, water, non-perishable food, flashlight, batteries and a whistle (to signal for help).

Additional supplies: Extra infant food, extra cash, important records, pet supplies, fire extinguisher, change of clothes, books/games.

2. The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning from noon until 8 p.m. It says there is extreme fire danger all along the Western Slope. Wind gusts are predicted to be up to 35 miles per hour, and the low relative humidity won’t help.

3. The community hotline is open and will be until 10 p.m. You can get evacuation notices and other assistance information by calling (970) 385-8700.

4. All road closures and evacuations remain in effect. Durango Fire and Rescue says there is no timeline for lifting or opening.

5. The City of Durango has positioned its live camera at the Santa Rita Water Reclamation Facility to periodically show the fire behind Perins Peak. The camera was set up for people to watch the progress of the tearing down and rebuilding of the water treatment plant. But since Wednesday night, it has pointed its camera toward the fire. You can watch the live cam here:
