Montezuma Water Company representatives were at the Dolores town meeting Tuesday to ask for agreement to place a line across the Fourth Street ridge and for assistance in the project. Long-range planning for water contracts between the company and town will also be discussed since the rural water company is seeking loan funds now to extend their service with an eventual 500 additional taps within the next three years.

Frank Gonzales of Dolores was recently honored with the receipt of a 25-year service award pin from the state Department of Highways.

Federal, state and local health officials are teaming up in an attempt to control the potential for plague in southwestern Colorado where prairie dog populations are extremely high. Montezuma County has formed a pest-control district and has dusted prairie dog burrows in the Corte area with insecticide to kill the infective fleas which carry the disease. There is no direct evidence of plague in the area but residents want to take precautionary measures. Dr. Allan Barnes, chief of the plague section at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) laboratories in Fort Collins, said the prairie dog population within the city of Cortez has been estimated at four times the human population.

Marlyn V. Jones, district manager of the Montrose District, Bureau of Land Management, has announced that the District will provide training in range management for five foreign national students. The students are from Jordan, Nigeria, Uganda and Tanzania, and are sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Mrs. B.M. Tarpey and three children from Pasadena, Texas, are here to spend the summer. Mrs. Tarpey reports that the winter had been very hard on her house, the former Dalrymple residence, and without the help of neighbor Don Noland, she would have been in desperate straits when she arrived early this week.

Summit Ridge by Jo Rodgers: Well, June has started out with a bang and plenty of moisture One and a half inches were reported to have fallen Sunday and Sunday night, along with a few showers Monday. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm ready for some of that hot dry weather that "usually" pops up this time of year.
