Surprise tactics and a small voter turnout in the school board election held here Tuesday combined to upset the two incumbents, putting two write-in candidates into office for the next four years: George Rogers Jr. and Frank Gonzales.

Nielsons Inc. were low bidders on a paving job on Sixth Street in Durango with a bid of $111,000.

Cleanup Day in Dolores last Saturday found a group hauling many loads of trash to the dump. They were Dave Sanford, Howard Gebel, Walter Thompson, Robbie Carrigan, Mike Martinez, Sue Anderson, Keith Quintana, Brian Warner, James Scrivner, Larry Quintana, Carl Englehart, Dennis Water, Bill Kenworthy, Clyde Steel, Boy Scouts and members of the Chamber of Commerce.

Also working on the cleanup earlier in the week were a group of Girl Scouts and their leaders, who swept the sidewalks in the business district. They were Lenetta Oakes, Penny Leavell, Trina Anderson, Sandra Rogers, Mary Roberts, Elizabeth Roberts, Roberta Henes, Shelly Tomberlin, Lisa Stephenson, Malinda Brunner, Joann Stryker, Lee Atkinson, Gail Johnson, Ellen Hill, Kristine Orr, Tracy D. Stratton, LaReta Conzales and Shelly Misener.

Frank C. Carman has been added to the staff at the San Juan Basin Area Vocational-Technical School as Job Development Specialist. He will be coordinating the job placement of students in conjunction with instructors and the Colorado State Employment Service.

Esther Wilson's Yellow Jacket news: Barbara Burke, Donnie and Theresa ate dinner with Joan Mahaffey Wednesday and were down to see Lee Chaffin on Tuesday morning. Due to all this sticky mud, she managed to get stuck, and Chub helped her out.

A coyote control contest is being held in Dolores, Montezuma, La Plata and parts of San Miguel and Archuleta counties. Prizes will be awarded for the most coyotes (a .222 rifle), longest male (.22 rifle) and longest female (.22 rifle).

FFA officers recently elected for the coming year are Lyle Bair, Joel Maxcy, Chris Walker, Jerry Cooper, Dart Nielson, Judy Melton and Casey Filener.
