‘Pray for rain’

Wayne Semler feeds hay to his cattle herd on the family ranch outside Bayfield. Semler, president of the La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen’s Association, said area ranchers have been hard hit by the drought and need to buy hay because their fields aren’t producing enough.
A recently born calf on the Semler ranch gives hope for a profitable summer season. Because of the drought, many area ranchers have decreased the size of their herds.
Melody and Wayne Semler head out to check on their cattle. The Semlers have begun raising chickens, pigs and sheep in addition to supplement their cattle operation, which has declined during the drought.
The start of their day finds the Semlers feeding their animals. Their day included fence repair, calving and lambing, among myriad chores.
