Memorial services for longtime Pleasant View resident Gary Denton Greaves will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3 at Ertel Memorial Chapel.
Gary died at the age of 66, in his Pleasant View home on Tuesday, December 31, 2013.
Gary was born on August 17, 1947, in Brooklyn, N.Y. to John Denton Greaves and Jean Audrey (Wagner) Greaves. Gary lost his mother when he was two years old. He was four when his father remarried Dorothy (Treiber) Greaves. This is the only mother he said he ever knew and he spoke of her with love and admiration.
Gary is preceded in death by his father, John Greaves; mother, Jean Greaves; infant daughter, Tobey; and son, Jimmy at age 15. Gary is survived by his wife, Kate; daughter, Brandy; son-in-law, Sean Fox; two granddaughters, Kelly and Kayla Fox; mother, Dorothy Greaves; sister, Gail Berretta; niece, Jaime Brede; and nephew, Matt Hyland.
Gary was a cowboy for several ranches in his teens and twenty’s. He rode saddle bronc and bare back in many pro rodeos. He married Kate in 1971, and moved to Dillon, Colo.
He worked for the Denver Water Board and Eisenhower Tunnel in Dillon, Colo. for the first several years of their marriage. They moved to the Denver area to find work. Gary worked several jobs before he became a truck driver for the next 35 years. In his profession he drove nearly 3 million miles accident free.
Gary and Kate settled in Pleasant View, Colo. in 1999. In his fifty’s, Gary decided to break young colts and train them. He raised cattle on their ranch near the San Juan Mountains, a place he never wanted to leave. His granddaughters would visit every year for a month to go riding with their grandpa and will have the memories of their times together for the rest of their lives. He will be missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.
