Colorado launches effort to plug abandoned wells in La Plata County

Armed with a strong budget, state regulator can now tackle orphaned gas sites
Crews bore down about 3,200 feet in an existing gas well to pump cement into it and seal the abandoned well southeast of Redmesa. The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has identified several orphan wells in the area that the agency wants to plug.
Shannon Chollet, an engineer with the orphan-well program, said lack of information about an abandoned well can make cleanup challenging.
When operators default or disappear without a trace, it’s up to the state of Colorado and taxpayer money to plug orphan wells, which can pose a threat to health and safety.
