I went to our Montezuma County courthouse last Tuesday, to attend the commissioners meeting. When I entered the building, I saw a sign indicating where the stairs are for the second floor.
I am elderly with bad knees, and stairs are difficult.
I asked the receptionist where the elevator might be. She told me, “There is one, but it’s not for the public.”
Because I needed to get up there for the meeting, I pulled myself up the stairs and made it back down them later on, but how can that be?
Our public courthouse doesn’t enable handicapped people to participate? This clearly can’t be so, but that was my experience.
I hope it was an untrained receptionist, but even if it was, it’s unacceptable.
I saw no sign pointing to an elevator.
