Private funeral services for Cortez Police Department Sgt. Michael Moran will be held Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the Cortez Recreation Center, according to a news release Sunday from the city.
Moran was gunned down during a traffic stop last week.
Events begin about 8:20 a.m. with a procession through downtown Cortez. The procession will travel east on Main Street, between Chestnut Street and Harrison Street.
Numerous law enforcement vehicles will escort Sgt. Moran’s casket and his family to the funeral at the Cortez Recreation Center. Community members are invited to line the route, but they are asked to stay on the sidewalk along Main Street as the procession makes its way through town.
Road closures include:
- 6:45-8 a.m.: The westbound lane of Seventh Avenue between L Way and Sligo Street.
- 6:45 a.m.-noon: Roger Smith Avenue between Empire Street and Montezuma Avenue.
- 7:45-9 a.m.: Main Street in both directions between Elm Street and Sligo Street.
- 8:45-9:15 a.m.: Mildred Road between Empire Street and Montezuma Avenue.
The Cortez Recreation Center will also be closed for the entire day, according to a news release sent by the Colorado Fallen Hero Foundation, which is helping coordinate funeral services and fundraising efforts.
The recreation center gym will close Dec. 5 at noon, and the recreation center will close at 5:30 p.m. for preparations. The rec center will close all day Wednesday for the service.
All planned and scheduled classes and reservations will be canceled. The public will not be permitted in the building during the closure, the news release said, adding that the public should avoid the area,
The rec center will reopen Thursday at 5:30 am.

The Colorado Fallen Hero Foundation, which is helping coordinate funeral services for slain Cortez Police Sgt. Michael Moran, said the memorial service will be streamed live on Facebook.
The funeral is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Cortez Recreation Center, which will be closed to the public for the entire day.
The Fallen Hero Foundation declined a request by The Journal and The Durango Herald to provide videos, photos and a livestream of the service.
Instead, the event will be livestreamed by Mesa Media Productions via Facebook “or your local news station at 10 a.m.,” according to the Fallen Hero Foundation.
