‘We all must elect sane politicians’

I just read a statement by one of the House Republicans who was excoriating Speaker Kevin McCarthy for doing what was considered unthinkable: reaching out to House Democrats to pass a resolution to keep the federal government from shutting down.

I was thunderstruck at the appalling ignorance that anyone in Congress should so detest someone of the opposite party that they would fail to understand how our system of government works, or rather, should work. We Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated voters must work together to solve our country’s problems. That is how our government was set up by the founders because they knew what had happened in other countries where rule by autocrat or king only tramples the rights of individuals.

We all must elect sane politicians who are willing to reach compromises for the good of America, even if it means one side or the other does not get everything it wants. Our democracy will truly die if these types of individuals keep getting elected. We are responsible for stopping this nonsense. We are the ones who elect these people. We are the ones who can make sure that such one-sided fanatics – of either party – do not run Congress.
