I just got mugged by the state of Colorado.
I took my $59.96 down to the Montezuma County Department of Motor Vehicles to register my 45-year-old Ford pickup, which is used about four times a year – two trips to the dump and two loads of hay. I cheerfully handed over my $59.96 to a nice young lady, who kindly informed me that I was two months late in renewing my registration, so I was to pay an additional $50 penalty.
I explained that at the time I received the notice, I did have not have the $59.96. They essentially said “tough cookies.” But they said it nicely, so I paid this very unfair penalty for being poor.
I was mugged.
