The Durango High School volleyball team improved to 8-3 overall with a dominant 25-7, 25-14 and 26-24 sweep of Piedra Vista on Tuesday in Farmington.
Sarah Somrak led the Demons with 11 kills while Aava Dreger spiked nine and Hadyn Neiman added seven. Neiman also served a pair of aces while Tyler Trujillo recorded 23 digs, Dreger dug 22 balls and Eva Stewart assisted 29 points in the win.
Next, DHS will return home for a pair of 4A/5A SWL games. DHS, 1-1 in league play, will host Grand Junction (1-9, 0-3) on Friday and Fruita Monument (7-4, 4-0) on Saturday.
The Durango High School boys soccer team scored a 2-0 win over league-foe Montrose on Thursday to extend its winning streak to three games. The Demons improved to 7-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the 4A Southwestern League with the win while the Red Hawks slipped to 2-5-1, 1-2-1.
Fruita Monument (3-4-2, 2-0-0) scored a 3-1 win over Grand Junction (4-3-2, 1-1-1) and currently leads the SWL. After playing at Pagosa Springs (4-3-1) on Tuesday, the Demons and Wildcats will meet Friday in Grand Junction.
Freshman Ashlyn Salas was the difference maker for Fort Lewis College womens soccer in its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener on Thursday, scoring her first career goal in the 75th minute to lead FLC to a 1-1 tie with CSU-Pueblo.
The Skyhawks remain unbeaten in 2023 with a 4-0-3 overall record and a 0-0-1 mark in conference play. The Pack moves to 2-1-3, 0-0-1.
The Skyhawks will next play a pair of home games. FLC will take on New Mexico Highlands for the Nike N7 game at 7 p.m. Friday. The Skyhawks will then play in a Pink Game against Adams State University at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Bayfield High School volleyball team squared off with Centauri on Friday in 3A Intermountain League play at BHS.
Centauri, however, won a trio of tight sets to take the match 25-20, 25-19 and 26-24.
BHS slipped to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the league with the loss. Centauri improved to 7-5, 2-1.
Bayfield was also scheduled to play the league-leading Alamosa Mean Moose (6-4, 2-0) on Saturday.
The Fort Lewis College volleyball team fell in its RMAC road opener on Friday in straight sets to Colorado Christian University, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-19.
The Cougars hit .319 for the match and held the Skyhawks to a .147 clip. A big piece of the puzzle was the block where Colorado Christian edged out FLC by a 9-3 margin. Senior JJ Curry led FLC with 10 kills, followed by junior Alexis Hobie with eight. Junior Natalia Lambos recorded 22 assists to go along with two kills. Junior Sarah Wilkey led all players with 15 digs.
FLC dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play with the loss while Colorado Christian improved to 5-6, 1-2.
FLC was also scheduled to play at Chadron State College on Saturday evening. Next week, FLC will be on the road against Adams State on Friday and New Mexico Highlands on Saturday.
