Cortez Public Library sponsors film ‘Landfill Harmonic’

The Cortez Public Library in collaboration with the Sunflower Theatre, will be showing the documentary film “Landfill Harmonic” on Monday, Nov. 14.

In one of the poorest slums in Latin America, a humble garbage picker uses his ingenuity to craft instruments out of recycled materials — and a youth orchestra is born. Music arises and children find new dreams.

Landfill Harmonic follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan musical youth group who live next to one of South America’s largest landfills. This unlikely orchestra play music from instruments made entirely of out of garbage. When their story goes viral, the orchestra must navigate a new world of arenas and sold out concerts, And when a natural disaster devastates their

community, the orchestra provides a source of hope for the town.

Showtime is 7 p.m., and doors open at 6:15 p.m. Admission is a suggested donation of $5.

The film is part of a documentary series partnership between the Cortez Public Library and the Sunflower Theatre.
