A collision Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 160, about 4 miles east of Mancos, killed a driver of a Kia automobile and injured two travelers in a motor home, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The highway full reopened about 8 p.m., according to a message alert from the Montezuma County Emergency Alert System.

The driver of the Kia died at the scene, said Capt. John Trentini of the Colorado State Patrol. The two travelers in the motor home were taken to a hospital, one by ambulance and the other by AirCare helicopter.

“It was a fatal crash that we expect to be a head-on,” said Trentini said. “We’re still under investigation, though.”

The eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway were quickly shut down after the 1:49 p.m. crash at Road J.8. At 2:57 p.m., traffic was at a standstill for 2 miles east of Mancos. By 3:15 p.m., traffic was moving in alternating lanes, said Trentini.

It was reported that the driver of the Kia was not wearing a seat belt.

Trentini advised travelers to take detours if heading toward Durango or Cortez because he expected the investigation to continue for a few more hours.

Colorado State Patrol does not know who was at fault but they suspect alcohol was involved.
