San Juan County Sheriff's Office warned community members of a scam circulating the area involving a caller identifying himself as Lt. Mike White and attempting to solicit payments by phone for missed court.

The caller reportedly tells the person that they may pay fees in person, but for his or her convenience fees may also be paid over the phone.

SJCSO stated that the office does not employ a Lt. Mike White and that the Sheriff’s Office does not collect court fees. They do not collect fees over the phone for any reason.

SJCSO recommended that individuals always call an agency directly to make a payment rather than making a payment when contacted by an individual in order to validate that the fee exists and that payments are being paid to a legitimate agency.
