The Cortez Pepperjax got a “wakeup call” Saturday morning against the Bombers, then rebounded in Game 2 of the doubleheader to roll past the Warriors in the Farmington Amateur Baseball Congress league.
In Game 1 on June 25, Costner Hernandez was the only Jax to cross the plate in the one-sided 18-1 Bombers victory.
But the “high noon showdown” would go Pepperjax way, said head coach Jason Hernandez, as the 12-and-under Cortez boys coasted to a 20-1 win in the shortened game against the Warriors.
“Chase York got another pitching win, and I believe everyone in the lineup had a hit or two and scored a run,” Hernandez said.
Next up for the Pepperjax are the Northern Bulldogs, at 7:15 p.m. Monday.
Beginning July 5, the Pepperjax will compete in the FABC city tournament. Hernandez said he was confident the Pepperjax would be seeded No. 8 or 9 for the single-elimination tournament.
The Pepperjax also split a doubleheader on June 15, beating the Cobras 17-4 with a strong defensive effort from pitchers Art Lein and Zan Coffey, said Hernandez.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the nightcap against NM Pack, Pepperjax pitcher Chase York kept it close, but the NM Pack’s bats heated up late in the game. The Pepperjax lost 14-2.
The results followed a tough schedule in May.
- On May 7, the Pepperjax split a doubleheader, beating NM Thunder 10-6, and losing to the Sidewinders 17-4.
- On May 14, the Pepperjax beat the Panthers 7-6.
- On June 3, the Pepperjax lost 18-2 to Next Level 4C. In the second game, The Pepperjax lost a last-inning heartbreaker to the 11-and-under NM Pack 12-10, after coming back from a 6-0 deficit to go ahead 10-9 in their last at-bat.
