Kiselya Plewe wins at regionals

Dolores girls' golf team finishes 6th overall

With rain falling at the Cobble Creek Golf Club in Montrose on May 5, the Dolores High School girls' golf team finished sixth at the Class 4A West Slope Regional Golf Tournament.

Leading the way for Dolores was junior Kiselya Plewe, who, seemingly unbothered by the wet conditions, fired a tournament-best round of 73. With her victory, Plewe remained undefeated on the season and qualified for state.

"(Winning) feels great," said the junior, who attends Montezuma-Cortez High School. "I love this course and I'm just glad I put a good round together today. It was fun."

Also turning in an impressive round for Dolores was junior Keyana Matteson, who matched her season-best score of 101 and narrowly missed qualifying for state.

"(Keyana's) short game was really solid early in the round," said Dolores head coach Jeff Carr. "With the inclement weather, she had a couple of bad holes and that kept her out of the state tournament."

Rounding out the Dolores team's players was home-schooled junior Abigail Smith, who shot a career-best round of 108 to wrap up just her second year of competitive golf.

"Through her hard work this year, (Abigail's) swing has gotten tighter," Carr said. "She can generate more power through the ball and her distance has improved considerably."

As a team, the Lady Bears shot a season best score of 282. Montrose High School finished first in the tournament with a combined score of 255.

"It feels really good to finish where we did," said Carr. "I kind of wish that our season would be a little bit longer because we are steadily improving and I think we could get even better."

Although the Dolores team will not compete at state, Plewe will represent the Lady Bears at Colorado's premiere female prep golfing event, which will take place at the River Valley Ranch Golf Club in Carbondale, May 18-19.

"Kiselya won in Aspen a couple of weeks ago, so she knows the course," said Carr. "This week, we're going to work on her short game and work out a good strategy for the course. I'm very hopeful for a good finish and I do believe that Kiselya has the skills to win it."
