The Colorado Department of Transportation has begun survey work for a project to improve curb ramp access for disabled pedestrians along West Grand Avenue in Mancos.
U.S. Highway 160D was selected to receive CDOT funding designated for improvements to comply with the American Disability Act, said Tony Marusiak, CDOT project manager.
The area was chosen because of “available funding and the desire to upgrade the ADA curb ramp features at street intersections,” Marusiak said in an email.
Crews will survey the Grand Avenue area through June. Engineering design work is then slated to start this spring and go through next spring.
Survey crews will be present Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., although minimal disruption is expected on the sidewalks, shoulder of the roadway and driving lanes of the roadway.
The work will take place on Grand Avenue from Monte Street to Boyle Park, and on Main Street from Grand Avenue to Bauer Avenue.
To upgrade curb ramps to ADA standards, CDOT will assess sidewalk slopes, stormwater drainage and ease of connectivity with adjacent side streets. It will also install surface treatments with truncated domes for better traction.
The project’s design budget is $300,000, and construction funding has not yet been finalized, Marusiak said.
The town is looking into additional funding sources to provide for more sidewalk work in partnership with CDOT, Marusiak said.
Mancos Town Manager Heather Alvarez did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
