The Montezuma-Cortez boys golf team shot their way to a spot in the 3A State Championships in Elizabeth this year, and they’re going on their way with a police and fire send-off Saturday.

“I really appreciate the community support and the excitement that the community has for the team,” coach Todd Plewe said.

This is the third consecutive year the team has ventured to the Colorado High School Activities Association state championship, and coach Plewe is radiating pride – not only for his son Thayer Plewe, but the team as a whole.

“We’ve developed a pretty good tradition,” he said.

He said he hopes that the team is competitive, but also enjoys the moment.

Sophomore Kaden Huff, freshman Vince Lopez, freshman Gavin Frost and junior Thayer Plewe will represent the school at the Spring Valley Golf Club in Elizabeth Monday and Tuesday, after shooting 238 as a team and finishing second at the regional tournament.

“The only thing you can do is your best,” coach Plewe said. “You can’t control what other people or other teams do.”

Lineup for the send-off will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Panther Stadium West parking lot, and the escort will begin at 11:45 a.m.

Supporters are encouraged to wave, honk, and make signs to display along the route, which will go from Third Street, turn onto U.S. Highway 160 heading north, east on Main Street through Cortez and then to the east Maverik station.

Coach Plewe said the team members, who will all have another shot at reaching states next year, have really dedicated themselves to refining their sport.

“We’re excited,” Coach Plewe said. “The future looks bright for golf at Cortez High School.”
