Playing her final tournament of the regular season at River Valley Ranch Golf Club in Carbondale on April 24, Montezuma-Cortez High School junior Kiselya Plewe placed first overall with a four-over-par round of 72.
Thanks in large part to Plewe’s efforts, the Dolores High School girls golf team finished fourth overall in the tournament’s 11-team field with a season-low three-round total of 289. Montrose won the tournament with a team score of 277.
“The conditions were horrible,” said Dolores head coach Jeff Carr. “It snowed, and it rained, and it was nasty. It was really good to see the team do so well because we have Regionals in Montrose on May 4.”
Among the highlights of the team’s day were several stellar shots by Plewe during a one-under-par back nine. The junior finished five over par on the front nine of the River Valley Ranch Golf Club, which will host the Class 4A State Golf Championship, May 18-19.
Plewe has finished first in all six tournaments she has played this season.
Also enjoying a solid day for the Dolores team was M-CHS junior Keyana Matteson, who overcame a few rough holes to tie her lifetime best score of 102.
“Keyana is just a couple of swings away from firing in the mid-90s,” Carr said. “In golf, one bad swing can result in two or three shots because you end up putting the ball in a difficult place.”
Rounding out the team’s scorers was home schooled junior Abigail Smith, who shot a lifetime best round of 111.
“It was the first time that Abigail had seen the golf course,” said Carr. “In really inclement conditions, she shot really well.”
Next up for the Dolores team will be the West Slope Regional Tournament, which will be held at Cobble Creek Golf Club in Montrose. Plewe will enter the tournament as the favorite and Carr said that he expects her to play well.
“I’m confident that Kiselya is going to qualify for state,” Carr said. “One team goes, and I’m hopeful that Keyana and Abigail can qualify as well.”
“When I show up for the practice round, putting is going to be my focus,” Plewe said. “When I putt well, I play well. My goal is to make birdies and shoot par or under.”
