Restoring the historic press

Mancos Common Press gets $1,000 nod from town board

Having a historical tribute to newspapers was a good idea, according to the Mancos Town Board, who earlier this month awarded a $1,000 grant to the Mancos Common Press, an organization dedicated to restoring the historic Mancos Times-Tribune building.

According to paperwork filed with the town, "It's goal is two-fold: to contribute to the development of the arts and education locally, regionally and nationally and to promote cultural tourism for the town and region through the restoration of the historic Mancos Times-Tribune building as a new facility for students and graphic artists to live and work in Mancos."

The entire project is expected to cost about $213,435, and a History State Historical Fund grant has been applied for.

The project will see upgrades to the historic building, while the historic press inside the building will be put on display.

There was an open house regarding the project in April and more than 60 people attended and locally $12,000 has been raised for the project, which will eventually partner with the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design.

Construction and upgrades could begin as early as the spring of 2015, if other grants can be earned.
