Firefighters mop up a one-acre fire on Road 35 in the Cedar Mesa subdivision.
A sudden lightning storm Monday afternoon sparked eight spot fires in and around the Cedar Mesa neighborhood across U.S. 160 from Mesa Verde National Park. Three fires were on public lands, including one in Weber Canyon. Montezuma County sheriff deputies were going door to door issuing pre-evacuation orders, but Sheriff Dennis Spruell said he did not expect evacuations to take place. Mancos Fire Chief Tony Aspromonte reported that the fires were being contained as of 3 p.m.
