Two bodies found at residence south of Oxford

SWAT teams called to house

Two people were found dead inside a residence south of Oxford after SWAT teams from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and the Durango Police Department were called to assist the Southern Ute Police Department.

Sgt. Chris Burke, spokesman with the Sheriff’s Office, said several gunshots were heard inside the residence, and SWAT teams were called around 4:30 a.m. Sunday to help contain the area.

After gunshots were heard, he said several unsuccessful efforts were made to contact people inside the house and a tactical robot was used to enter the house before law enforcement officials made entry.

Law officers discovered two bodies in the house. Burke declined to identify the victims. He said efforts were being made to contact the next of kin.

Burke declined to offer further details, saying the incident is under investigation.

He said La Plata County Corner Jann Smith will make final determination of cause of death.
