Dolores, 40 Years Ago

Deer hunters in this area had better success than last year according to Game and Fish Officer Bill Fischer. There were plenty of hunters although probably not as many as some previous years when the deer and elk seasons ran concurrently.

This week the elk hunters have been coming in heavily and probably in greater numbers than the just-ended deer season. Many of them are heavier equipped with more horse and pack outfits to handle the heavier elk and to get into the higher elevations

Weather at midweek was continuing to be excellent Indian summer type days and not too cold nights making getting into the higher camping areas rather easy this year.

During the deer season there were many hunters who came into the area after finding the hunting not so good in other parts of Southwest Colorado where they had hunted in other years. This same trend may show during the elk season also if recent building development in mountain areas to the east of here continues to disturb the elk herds and cause them to move out of previously good hunting locations.
