Thanks to Rachel Demby’s hard work, dedication and desire, Montezuma-Cortez High School finally had a represented at the Colorado 4A State Cross Country Championships.
Running against a stacked field in Colorado Springs on Saturday, Oct. 26, the star junior capped off her outstanding season with a solid performance, finishing 82nd out of 183 runners with a time of 21:52.
“State was good,” said Demby, discussing her performance. “It was a different experience. There were so many girls and people were yelling my face the whole time. I didn’t have a lot of expectations, but I felt that I ran to the best of my ability at the time.”
With the cross country season now behind her, Demby will enjoy a brief rest before resuming notoriously tough training regiment.
“I’m going to take two weeks off and then start training for track,” said Demby. “I’m going to do some indoor stuff.
As for her future in cross country, Demby is hoping to return to the state meet next season.
“I hope I can go up there again next year,” said Demby. “It’s one of my goals. Hopefully I can learn from this year and return an even better runner.”
Considering her past record of sustained improvement, it seems highly likely that Demby will accomplish her goal and in doing so, produce several exciting performances in the year to come.
