Recently we read about the declining deer herds in our area.
We moved to Cortez in June 1970 and enjoyed excellent deer hunting for years. Then the uninformed voters in the metro areas voted to stop trapping coyotes and all predators. The coyote population grew and the deer suffered.
Coyotes kill deer – especially when the doe is giving birth. Now there are mountain lions. The state game biologists say an adult lion will take a deer a week. So if there are 10 lions, that’s 250 deer a year. How about 50 lions?
Talk to a lion hunter if you want a better idea of how many lions are in our area.
