M-CHS wrestling team dominates first dual of 2019

Higgins, Abeyta, Broughton, Frost and Hall score pins in 60-9 victory over San Juan

Competing for the first time since before Christmas, the Montezuma-Cortez High School wrestling team showed few signs during a 60-9 dual victory over San Juan High School in Blanding on Jan. 3.

Among the winners for M-CHS was senior Matthew Broughton, who pinned Tyrese Jones in the first period of what turned out to be another dominant victory at 152 pounds. Fellow senior Shawn Higgins also continued what has been an impressive run of success when he pinned Joshua Lacy in the 138-pound match.

Other pin victories for the Panthers came courtesy of Anthony Abeyta, who pinned Zachary Palmer in the 145-pound match; Kale Hall, who pinned Isaac Jacobs in the 220-pound match; and Devan Frost, who pinned Nigel Sam in the 285-pound showdown.

Kael Buffington, Jayven Valdez, Casen Allmon, Kerwin Tom and Swayde Noyes all earned forfeit victories after San Juan High School was unable to fill their respective weight classes.

M-CHS’ Austin Featherman was pinned by San Juan’s Lymir Benn in the 126-pound match, and M-CHS’ Stevie Fuentes lost an 8-5 decision to Landon Black at 132 pounds.

Next on the schedule for M-CHS will be a road dual against Alamosa High School on Jan. 11, followed by the Alamosa Tournament on Jan. 12.
