Plewe finishes 6th in state

Dolores High golfer enjoys outstanding sophomore season
Kisela Plewe chips onto the green at the Bridges girls high school golf tournament earlier this year. Plewe finished sixth in the state.

Competing in the Class 4A State Golf Tournament, May 19-20, Dolores High School golfer Kiselya Plewe got off to a rough start.

The star sophomore rebounded however, playing impressively in the second round to earn a sixth-place finish.

Struggling with her swing in the first round of the Tournament, which was held at the Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs, Plewe was uncharacteristically inconsistent, shooting a season high score of 90.

“The first day, I was not swinging well and not hitting the ball well,” said Plewe. “I had a lot of three-putts and it was really frustrating. Nothing really went my way.”

After several hours of practice with Dolores head coach Jeff Carr however, Plewe returned to the course on May 20 with renewed confidence.

Firing a second round score of 79, Plewe moved from 22nd overall into a tie for sixth.

Jennifer Kopcho of Jefferson Academy won the Class 4A tournament after shooting a first round score of 72 and a second round score of 74.

“I was just more focused on hitting fairways and greens,” said Plewe. “I always put myself in the best position that I could.”

Over the course of the season, Plewe was nothing short of spectacular, winning all six regular season tournaments in which she entered. Plewe was also victorious in the West Slope Regional Tournament, winning by six strokes.

“For her individually, I was very excited,” said Carr. “She has shown maturity in terms of thinking her way through the golf course and understanding her swing.”

Looking ahead to next season, Plewe figures to be even better, as does the Dolores High School team, which will be entering its third season of play.

“This summer, I’m playing in a lot of qualifying tournaments for national events,” said Plewe. “I’m just going to keep working hard and try to get back to the State Tournament next year.”
