Paving road work is suspended near Dolores

Colorado Department of Transportation contractor Skanska Civil USA West Rocky Mountain District Inc. is suspending paving work on Colorado 145 from Cortez to Dolores until late July.

The contractor has encountered additional work on a separate project near Pagosa Springs and will resume work on Colorado 145 on July 21.

Prepaving activities have been completed near County Road P, and the project will resume in July with additional milling of the roadway in Cortez, followed by paving of the entire stretch between mile point 0 and 9.4. Motorists are asked to maintain the posted speed limit of 40 mph at County Road P.

Appleseed Collective coming to Dolores

Mix the Hot Club of Paris with the sweaty soul of Dixieland, a couple of blades of bluegrass, a pinch of ragtime beat and some western swing swagger, and you've just conjured the sound of The Appleseed Collective. Over the past couple of years, the band has put the pedal to the metal touring the country in support of their 2012 album "Baby to Beast" and their recently released "Young Love" (January 2014).

The band will play Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Dolores River Brewery, 100 S. 4th St., at 8 p.m.

Formed in 2010 in Ann Arbor, Mich., The Appleseed Collective is powered by a strong sense of do-it-yourself drive. In the age of over-arching corporations and creeping climate change, the band is committed to buying and selling locally, eating from gardens whenever possible and working collectively.

In 2010, guitarist Andrew Brown had a fortuitous chance meeting with Brandon Smith, violinist and improvisation enthusiast; Andrew knew he'd found the Stephane Grapelli to his Django Reinhardt. The band then quickly came together, with the addition of vocalist and banjo player Katie Lee and double bassist Joe Fee.

The newly released album "Young Love" features songs written by Brown, Lee, and Smith, and was tracked almost entirely live. From Andrews Sisters'-esque harmonies to rapid bluegrass changes to bossa nova-turned-psychedelia, Young Love is the musical exploration of old souls stuck in younger bodies, figuring it all out as they go.

The Appleseed Collective is not a bluegrass band, not a Hot Club of Paris knock-off, and not a ragtime cover band. The Appleseed Collective represents Americana music rooted in globalist traditions from all over the world, regardless of era or genre, creating an uplifting and welcoming live experience.

The Real Detroit Weekly says ...

"Not exactly the kind of stuff you're hearing on the radio, which is only half of what makes us think they're pretty darn cool. But the fact that along with a mandolin, violin and banjo, they also include a washboard in their incredibly dynamic, filled-out sound...well, it doesn't get much better than that."
