Benefiting from a teamwide effort that included individual event victories by Jordan Elder, Brenn Jeter and Cael McHenry, the Dolores High School track teams finished third at the Terry Alley Invitational in Pagosa Springs on May 4.
For Elder, individual event victories came in the high jump (5 feet) and the 100-meter dash (13.44). The junior also earned second-place finishes in the 200-meter dash (27.57) and long jump (15 feet, 6 inches) and further cemented her status as one of the elite athletes in Colorado’s 2A Classification.
Joining Elder as a member of the girls team with an individual victory was Jeter, who placed first in the 100-meter hurdles (20.69). The junior also earned an eighth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 26 feet, 11¼ inches).
Other top performers for the girls team included sophomore Sydney Smith, who placed third in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches), third in the 100-meter dash (14.15) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (28.75).
Sophomore Sam Castillo placed third in the discus (91 feet, 1 inch) and the shot put (27 feet, 4½ inches) and freshman Erin Brown finished fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:15.19) and seventh in the long jump (12 feet, 6 inches). Sophomore Grace Burress crossed the line seventh in the 100-meter dash (14.76).
The Dolores girls team finished third in the team standings of the nine-team meet behind Monte Vista High School and team-champion Pagosa Springs.
On the boys side, Dolores was led by senior Cael McHenry, who placed first in the 300-meter hurdles (43.51) and second in the 110-meter hurdles (18.76).
Junior Aldon Adams narrowly missed out on victories in two sprinting events when he finished second in the 100-meter dash (11.60) and 200-meter dash (23.91). Sophomore Ryan Nowlin placed third in the 100-meter dash (11.74), and freshman Tyler Nowlin finished third in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches).
Junior Bryan Escarcega placed fourth in the shot put (33 feet, 5¼ inches) and seventh in the discus (88 feet, 11 inches), sophomore Camden Malloy finished fifth in the shot put (32 feet, 11¾ inches and eighth in the discus (85 feet, 7 inches, and freshman Shane Potter placed seventh in the 400-meter dash (1:00.95).
The Dolores boys team finished third overall in the team standings behind Monte Vista High School and team-champion Pagosa Springs High School.
Next up for both Dolores teams will be the Grand Junction Tiger Invitational in Grand Junction on May 10.
