Habitat for Humanity celebrates new home build

Local nonprofit seeking volunteers

Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County just kicked off another home build in Cortez, with plans to finish it by this fall.

Last week, Habitat for Humanity’s board of directors, staff, supporters, and the future homeowner celebrated the new home with a groundbreaking ceremony at the site on East 12th Street.

“We look forward to providing a new, energy-efficient home to a deserving community member and also wish to give a great shoutout to our gracious supporters who’ve helped make this year’s build possible,” said Dan Moseley, executive director of the local chapter. “Thank you Atmos Energy and Empire Electric.”

Habitat for Humanity builds affordable houses for qualified homebuyers, who partner with the organization in the homebuilding process. In 2008, Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County officially became an affiliate of the international nonprofit.

The group has completed exterior home repair projects throughout the county, along with six home builds, including two other projects on East 12th Street. Last August, Atmos Energy donated $50,000 to help Habitat build a more energy-efficient home for its 2020 build.

Organizers hope to wrap this build up in the fall, Moseley said. They are still looking for volunteers to take part in the build — anyone interested can contact Moseley by emailing director@habitatmontezuma.org or calling 970-565-8312.
