Officer-involved shooting southwest of Aztec results in death of robbery suspect

San Juan County Sheriff’s Office (N.M.) says task force investigating incident

An officer-involved shooting southwest of Aztec on Monday morning resulted in the death of a robbery suspect, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Office Capt. Kevin Burns said authorities around 9 a.m. were seeking an individual in connection to a robbery that occurred earlier Monday morning within San Juan County.

Officers found the suspect’s vehicle, which was determined to be stolen, and the suspect fled. The suspect went down a dead-end road and had a “violent confrontation” with deputies, Burns said. It appears the incident happened in the area of County Road 3100, about 3 or 4 miles southwest of Aztec.

“The deputy fired his duty weapon, and the subject is now deceased,” Burns said.

Burns said an officer-involved shooting task force is aiding in the investigation.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, the Sheriff’s Office had not released any further information on the incident. Burns said it may be late Monday or sometime Tuesday before additional information becomes available.
