Nine active COVID outbreaks in La Plata County

Most recent cases reported at Durango Kia and Home Depot
Nine active COVID-19 outbreaks were reported in La Plata County on Wednesday.

Two new COVID-19 outbreaks were reported this week in La Plata County at Durango Kia, involving three cases, and Home Depot, involving five cases.

In total, nine active outbreaks involving 87 cases and no deaths were reported in data released Wednesday by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The largest outbreak is listed at Durango High School involving 34 cases. It was originally reported Feb. 2.

With the COVID-19 vaccine widely available, most of the outbreaks are at schools and child care facilities.

Currently, COVID-19 vaccinations are available to anyone 16 and older.

The second biggest active outbreak with 17 cases is at Bayfield High School. The outbreak is listed as first being reported to public health authorities on Dec. 23.

The third most recent outbreak in La Plata County was reported April 22 at the Strater Hotel. It involves five cases.

Other currently listed active outbreaks are at Durango North Head Start, involving two cases; Fort Lewis College football team, nine cases; Needham Elementary School, eight cases; and Sunshine Gardens Senior Community, four cases.
