A Jicarilla Game and Fish officer has been arrested on suspicion of extreme cruelty to animals after authorities say the officer decapitated a family kitten.

The Bloomfield Police Department said officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of Mountain View for a welfare check on the home of Joseph Weaver, a Jicarilla Game and Fish officer who was off duty at the time.

Weaver’s wife told officers she was making dinner when Weaver called her into the bedroom, the Bloomfield Police Department said in a news release. When she entered the room, Weaver was standing with a pocketknife in his hand.

Weaver’s wife told authorities the family’s 9-week-old kitten was floating in the bathroom sink with the head severed from the body, the Bloomfield Police Department said.

Officers inspected the home, finding a bloody pocketknife, blood on the bathroom wall and a decapitated kitten wrapped in a towel.

Weaver was arrested on suspicion of extreme cruelty to animals, a fourth-degree felony and booked at the San Juan County Detention Center.
