M-CHS volleyball team closes regular season with impressive wins

Lady Panthers dominate Monte Vista and Grand Junction; Team awaits playoff seeding

Among the hottest programs in Colorado’s 3A Classification during the past two weeks, the Montezuma-Cortez High School volleyball team wrapped up its regular season with victories over Monte Vista and Grand Junction.

Playing at home against Monte Vista on Oct. 24, the Lady Panthers were led offensively by sophomore Avery Wright, who hammered down 13 kills and four aces in her team’s 25-9, 25-10, 25-12 victory.

On defense, junior Leigha Comisky amassed a match-best 20 digs.

Other key contributors were junior Myka Glover, who had 7 kills, senior Malia Begay and junior Amber Wood, who each had three aces, and junior Grace Olsen, who had a team-high three blocks.

Two days after beating Monte Vista, M-CHS returned home and again won, beating Grand Junction High School, 25-17, 25-20, 25-17.

Wright again was strong, delivering a team-high 15 kills. Glover, a junior, hammered down 14 kills.

Comisky and Wright led the Lady Panthers at the service line as each player recorded three aces. Olsen, a junior, registered a team-best four blocked shots.

The Lady Panthers were led defensively by Comisky, who had 18 digs. Wood and junior Devon McHenry also played well on the defensive side, and posted 13 digs each.

After winning four consecutive matches to close its regular season, M-CHS’s overall record now stands at 10-6 overall and 4-6 in the Intermountain League. The Lady Panthers will now await their playoff seeding, which will be released this week.
