A helicopter takes off after responding Wednesday to an injured motorcyclist on U.S. Highway 550 north of the New Mexico line.

A motorcycle crash Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 550 just north of the New Mexico line sent two Bloomfield residents to the hospital, including a woman who was airlifted with a head injury, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash occurred about 11:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of Highway 550. Both lanes of travel were closed while a helicopter landed. The highway remained partially closed while law enforcement investigated.

A 61-year-old man was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center, and a woman in her 60s was flown out with head injuries, said Trooper Jeffrey Chmielewski, with the State Patrol. He did not immediately have the victims’ identities.

The three-wheel trike Harley-Davidson motorcycle was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

No further information was available Wednesday night.
