Winter storms expected for Southwest Colorado mountains

Three to six inches of snow possible above 7,500 feet
Two small winter storms are tracking for the San Juan Mountains in the next few days.

The National Weather Service reports that a winter storm will hit the Southwest Colorado mountains tonight through Friday morning.

Warm temperatures will limit snowfall to areas above 10,000 feet this evening. However, as cold air moves across the area, snow levels will drop to about 7,500 feet by Thursday morning.

Shower activity, with possible thunderstorms, will continue Thursday and Thursday evening before ending early Friday morning. Storm total accumulations in the mountains is expected to be 3-6 inches across most mountain ranges.

While snowfall should be limited to the higher elevations and passes for much of the event, some impacts to travel will be felt during the day on Thursday and Thursday evening.

Another storm is expected to hit the region late Saturday through Sunday afternoon. This system will be colder than the current system and is expected to bring another round of light to moderate snow across the mountains. Snow levels will begin lower with this second system — between 6,000 and 7,000 feet — before dropping down to valley floors by Sunday morning.
