Bluejays pick up first win of the season at Gunnison Tournament

Volleyball team finishes 1-3 against tough competition

Competing at the Gunnison Tournament on Sept. 1, the Mancos High School volleyball team flashed its potential and fell just short of at least two victories while amassing a 1-3 record overall.

The first match of the day for Mancos came against Crested Butte and ended in a 25-21, 25-22 defeat. Magdalena Halls led the Bluejays in kills with seven. Morgan Rose had five kills, and Isis Jaime had four.

The Bluejays’ next match of the day came against Olathe, and after playing their best volleyball of the season, Mancos walked away with a 25-23, 25-22 victory. Halls again led her team in kills with 10, and Ericka Peacock, Rose and Jaime each smashed down three point-winning shots.

In Mancos’ third match of the day, the Bluejays squared off against San Juan Basin League rival Dove Creek and lost 25-16, 24-26, 15-7. Highlighting the match was a solid effort by Halls, who had a team-high eight kills. The junior was also credited with a team-high four blocks.

In their final match of the tournament, the Bluejays squared off against tournament host Gunnison and lost 25-17, 20-25, 15-8. Rose led her team with eight kills while playing a key role during Mancos’ second-set victory. Halls contributed six kills, and Jaime had five.

Now 1-4 on the season, the Bluejays were scheduled for a tough road matchup against San Juan Basin League foe Ignacio, which will take place on Sept. 6.
