Kyra Allen, of Cortez, will compete in the Miss Colorado Teen USA pageant Sunday in Greeley.

Allen, a freshman studying equine science at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, graduated from Montezuma-Cortez High School last year. The 17-year-old is the daughter of Leah and Shawn Allen, of Cortez.

The teen contest includes three segments – evening gowns, fitness/swimwear and interview.

“She’s pretty good at all three,” Leah Allen said Wednesday, “but I’d say she’s strongest at evening gown and fitness.”

Leah Allen planned to head to Greeley on Thursday morning.

Colorado has placed five times in the pageant’s history, all in the 1990s. Titleholders can earn thousands of dollars in prizes and awards, according to Denise Wallace, executive state co-director of the Miss Universe organization. Winners of the state contests advance to the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA contests, and winners of the national contests advance to the Miss Universe pageant.

Allen is sponsored by Wright Choice Inc, Belt Salvage, Keesee Motor Co., Vibrant Pet Animal Hospital, San Juan Gems and D&D Trailer Sales, Wallace said.

The competition will be held at the Union Colony Civic Center in Greeley at 4 p.m.
