Van collides with semi near U.S. 160-491 junction

The driver of this van attempted to take a right turn into the Keesee Motor Co., but collided with a southbound semitrailer in the adjacent lane. No injuries were reported.

A van collided with a semitrailer at the intersection of U.S. Highways 160 and 491 about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

No injuries were reported.

According to Cortez Police Sgt. Glen Edwards, the collision occurred as the driver of a southbound van on U.S. 160 merged onto southbound U.S. 491 and then attempted to make a right turn into the Keesee Motor Co. But in doing so, he crossed into the adjacent lane and collided with the front of a southbound semi coming from U.S. 491.

The driver of the van was issued a ticket for improper right turn and careless driving.

The accident caused the West Y intersection to be closed for about an hour as the wreckage was cleared. Cortez Police, Cortez Fire Protection District and a Southwest Health System ambulance responded to the scene.
